Echoes: 24 Modern Knits Inspired by Iconic Women features knitwear patterns dedicated to incredible women — both real and fictional — who have influenced the designer Susan Crawford’s life. The array of icons includes authors such as Beatrix Potter and Virginia Woolf, the musicians Cyndi Lauper and Kate Bush, as well as activists, artists, garden designers and more.

This versatile collection features a variety of styles and techniques. It includes cardigans, sweaters, vests, jackets, and a dress, as well as shawls, socks, hats, mittens, and even a tie. Susan created the designs to resemble heirloom pieces, well-loved and handed down through generations, with stories interwoven into their fabric.

The book showcases the continuing impact of others on each of us, and how inspiration often works: creating layers within layers, echoes within echoes.

“Every piece of this collection is carefully intertwined with the next: stories, inspiration, colours and yarns are all different yet connected, creating a knitted tapestry, echoes of each one woven together. I hope you enjoy knitting them as much as I have done!”

Susan Crawford is a British knitwear designer, fashion historian and author, known for her work on modernising vintage knitwear patterns. She lives in the Lake District in North West England — an area with stunning landscapes that also impact her work. Susan is particularly inspired by the stories carried within textiles and the intertwining of history and stitches. Echoes is Susan’s eighth book.

I’ve been waiting a long time to add this to my library. So glad I did!

Echoes could have been great

As an Anglophile I had high hopes for this book. Susan Crawford highlights English women who have inspired her, has terrific photos of the English countryside and some patterns for the experienced knitter.

But if you bought this book for the patterns I offer you a word of caution. The pattern directions seem quite lengthy and therefore, most likely give you all the instructions you need to knit the garment or accessory. However, the knitted pieces are rarely photographed in their entirety so you can get a helpful visual. For example, the Spencer sweater has interesting stitch details it shows on pictures of the shoulder and front in a gold color, but the full body pictures are done in dark red and far away so the details can’t easily be seen. This misstep happened throughout the book.

Photography will either make or break a knitting book. Echoes by Ms. Crawford could have been a classic. Sadly, she missed the mark.
