WEFT's Autumn issues are all about foundation building, and this time we focused on cotton. Cotton is the foundation of many weaving practices. Chances are, if you’re a weaver, you’ve woven with cotton, and probably very recently. This issue is a celebration and exploration of this humble and historied fiber. 

Jane Stafford opens the issue with a beautiful article about how cotton is the building block of her weaving, in all its different incarnations. From there we get the basics, including cotton types and differences, cotton counts, and the ins and outs of mercerization. The issue delves into natural dyeing; the differences in how cotton yarns are spun; and how to finish your cotton projects. We also challenge cotton with an article and experiment that tests what we’ve all heard about this staple in our weaving repertoire. 

And of course, there are gorgeous projects that all feature this versatile yarn.

Issue 5 Twill

Every Summer issue, Weft focuses on a weaving structure — and this time, it's twill! This hefty and gorgeous issue is bound to become a constant reference and source of inspiration; it might as well be a book with all it contains.

It opens with a large array of different twills (including a hand reference section); investigates and recreates different denims; explores designing in the tie-up and includes a 360 twill gamp project; explores how to move from gamp to project; digs deep into turned twills; demonstrates the neatest twill selvedges; explains tweeds and estate checks; examines twill as art; explains and explores the possibilities of point twills; excites us all by designing with twill progressions; introduces double diagonal twills; explains why krokbragd is a twill; and asks just what twill derivatives are.
